Pandemic Fatigue

Is anyone else experiencing pandemic fatigue? I’ve been feeling more tired and exhausted lately. I’m sure others are tired of being cooped up inside due to COVID-19. It’s been hard to keep up energy to focus on school, work and also being present as a caregiver.

Hello and welcome, stationaryqueen. I’m glad you reached out! Pandemic fatigue is definitely real these days, but you’ve already taken the first step in getting some support. You definitely aren’t alone in this feeling, so I hope that other young caregivers can share their experiences or what’s worked for them in this thread.

You might also find our page about ways to cope helpful: https://youngcaregiversconnect.ca/ways-to-cope/, although it’s not specific to COVID-19.

This is definitely something that was relatable in the beginning of the pandemic! There was also a study done in 2020 which mentioned that a lot of people were going to bed very late in comparison to the time that they would typically go to sleep pre-pandemic. Personally, I was going to bed at around 4am everyday and then I would sleep in, wake up to eat and go right back to sleep – wow, what a time that was haha!

Wow, 4am is very late! Sleep can have such a big impact on our wellbeing and the pandemic has really impacted a lot our routines.

I wanted to share a video of a webinar OCO hosted recently about resilience: Everyday Resilience. It talks about different ways we can foster resilience in our day to day lives, and with the pandemic going on so much longer than we all thought it would, I thought it might be helpful to share here!

I find myself relatively calm, when the pandemic started until I realized how crucial it was for me to not catch anything since I am a full-time caregiver for my grandmother who has dementia. Since she is a senior who has a weaker immune system, also living in an old care home made me extremely anxious about going outside. Constantly worried about her to the point where I would wear a mask inside and around her.

There are some good things that came out of this pandemic surprisingly, during my school year, all classes were online which gave me the ability to not leave my grandmother’s side which calmed my mind.
