What are some things you do to look after yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed? Netflix? Yoga? Talking to friends or someone who gets it? Especially during the pandemic, looking after ourselves is more important than ever but it’s not easy!

a lot of netflix for sure. Talking to friends
i I started to play a game, it helps me not think about things. but people do not get how it feels to be a POA, and caregiver. I did not know I am a caregiver until my friend pointed it out. I went to a social worker and therapists but no one pointed out. Talking to caring people really helps. I finally found some good friends that are thoughtful, I used to be judged by my friends. Is really to find a supportive circle.
Thank you for reaching out, I’m glad you found this site. It sounds like connecting with people who “get it” makes such a difference, but that finding good distractions helps too! So many caregivers don’t think of themselves as caregivers until someone points it out – I’m glad your friend did. I hope this community can be another source of support too, as there are many young caregivers here who know what you’re going through.
I practice square breathing – 1 breath in, hold that breath, 1 breath out and hold that breath again. It is a great way to practice emotional regulation and it helps calm me down when I am feeling overwhelmed. I also enjoy listening to music with lyrics that resonate with the current emotion that I am feeling. Another thing I enjoy doing is listening to coffee sound ambiance’s! It is a GREAT way for me to distract myself and it is also very calming.
I really like these ideas! It sounds like these are things that give you relief right in the moment and things that really anyone could do to unwind or de-stress. Thanks for sharing!
