Tips For Healthcare Teams

Some of your patients may have young family members involved in aspects of their care. Young caregivers are often mature beyond their years and want, and deserve to be, kept informed.

Here are some ways you can provide support:

  • Be compassionate and empathetic
  • Be open and honest when they ask questions about their family member’s health, care plan, and other needs
  • Provide information in an age appropriate manner, but be careful not to oversimplify or use phrases like “you don’t need to know that”
  • Explain to them how they can properly care for their family member
  • Help them understand what to expect in the short and long term

Develop a plan for emergency situations, including people who can be called any time of day or night
