I’m a caregiver for my mom, who has breast cancer. I’ve been caring for her for about a year and a half. I helped with her dressings after surgery and give her emotional support and also do more around the house. My mom is a very strong woman. She’s always been very active and independent. Seeing her in a way that she wasn’t able to care for herself and I had to help her, it was definitely a lot for me emotionally.
My advice for other young caregivers is to remember to take care of yourself too. You can’t care for them if you aren’t caring for yourself. Take time every day to do something that de-stresses you. And remember that you physically cannot do everything and that’s OK.
